From May 1 to 5, the 2026 Digestive Disease Week (DDW 2026) was held at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. A delegation led by Professor Li Xun, Vice President of Lanzhou University and Academic Leader of General Surgery at the First Hospital of Lanzhou University (LZUFH), along with professors from General Surgery Department, attended the conference to show the department's research achievements and clinical strengths in the field of digestive diseases.
The delegation presented a poster on a national multicenter study initiated by LZUFH: "Clinical Evaluation of a Serum 12-miRNA Test for Gastric Cancer Screening in a High-Risk Chinese Population: A Prospective Multicentre Study." This study focuses on the critical and challenging issue of early gastric cancer screening. Tailored to the characteristics of China's high-risk populations, it explores a precise and convenient serological screening method, providing important scientific support and clinical reference for early screening, diagnosis, and treatment of gastric cancer. The research attracted significant attention and in-depth discussions from international peers, fully demonstrating the hospital's research capabilities and innovation in the field of gastric cancer screening.
During the conference, Professor Li Xun and his team engaged in extensive exchanges with international experts and domestic colleagues on core topics such as new diagnostic and treatment technologies for digestive diseases, research innovation directions, and disciplinary development experiences. They actively shared the practical achievements of LZUFH's General Surgery Department in clinical diagnosis and treatment and scientific research, while also learning from advanced international concepts and research approaches, further broadening their academic horizons and strengthening the foundation for disciplinary development.

Professor Li Xun and his team also paid a special visit to the Transplantation Institute of the University of Chicago Medical School, where they held in-depth discussions with Professor John J. Fung, a leading international authority in organ transplantation, and his team. During the exchange, Professor Li Xun provided a detailed overview of the development of Lanzhou University and LZUFH, with a focus on sharing the latest progress and achievements in disciplinary development, clinical diagnosis and treatment, research innovation, and talent cultivation within the General Surgery Department. The two sides exchanged views on clinical challenges, basic research hotspots, and joint talent cultivation. They reached preliminary consensus on future international collaboration and sharing of technical achievements, building an important bridge for international cooperation for LZUFH's General Surgery Department. This will help enhance the department's international influence and promote its development to a higher level.
This delegation's participation not only showcased the research achievements of LZUFH's General Surgery Department on an international stage but also deeply integrated into high-level academic exchanges in the global field of digestive diseases. It effectively broadened the department's frontier perspectives, laying a solid foundation for incorporating advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies and research concepts, and further enhancing the department's overall strength.
