From June 3 to 5, at the invitation of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University (LZUFH), a delegation of experts from the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS), University of Oxford, including Prof. Freddie Hamdy, Prof. Simon Buczacki, and Prof. Fadi Issa, visited LZUFH for a three-day academic exchange. This visit marked further in-depth engagement following the hospital delegation's visit to the University of Oxford last August, where initial cooperation was reached.

On the morning of June 4, Prof. Bai Ming, President of LZUFH, met with the NDS delegation. He noted that both sides had already reached a consensus on talent cultivation and scientific research collaboration. He expressed hope that this visit would serve as a new starting point to deepen cooperation in areas such as personnel training, research innovation, academic exchange, and achievement transformation, establishing a long-term, stable, and mutually beneficial mechanism to further implement collaborative initiatives.



In the afternoon, the NDS expert team delivered special academic lectures. Prof. Freddie Hamdy systematically introduced the Oxford academic surgical system and its talent training model. Prof. Simon Buczacki shared cutting-edge findings on surgical oncology stem cells and the tumor microenvironment. Prof. Fadi Issa, focusing on "Oxford Cell Transplantation Research and Collaborative Opportunities," elaborated on innovative directions in transplantation medicine, including immune tolerance and organ preservation. Following the lectures, researchers and staff from relevant LZUFH departments engaged in discussions with the experts on topics such as autoimmune disease treatment and randomized controlled trials.
During their visit, the NDS delegation toured LZUFH's Clinical Skills Training Center, Minimally Invasive Surgery Simulation Teaching and Training Center, and conducted on-site exchanges with departments including General Surgery, Endoscopy Center, Medical Oncology, Orthopedics, Urology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pathology. They engaged in extensive discussions on discipline development, clinical diagnosis and treatment, research innovation, and international collaboration, reaching consensus on cooperation in clinical trials, AI-assisted diagnostic technologies, minimally invasive surgery, and digital pathology capacity building.


On the afternoon of June 5, a summary and feedback meeting was held. The NDS delegation highly commended LZUFH's strengths in clinical resources, research layout, and global cooperation vision, while providing targeted suggestions for the hospital's development based on international best practices.
Prof. Hou Xiaoming, Vice President of LZUFH, stated that the three-day exchange involved in-depth discussions on multiple frontier fields, including heart transplantation, cancer prevention and treatment, and AI digital pathology, yielding substantial and fruitful results. He looked forward to deepening practical cooperation with NDS in areas such as joint talent cultivation, collaborative research innovation, translation of pioneering clinical achievements, and regular exchange mechanisms, jointly advancing medical research innovation and clinical service quality.
